Star Spangled Stripes

2 Jul

Summer is the perfect time for stripes, and this summer is no exception. They are very versatile; clean, classic, sophisticated, fun and fabulous on any body type (as long as you keep a few key rules in mind). Stripes are perfect because they can be implemented with any of the other current fashion trends, which will completely change the vibe of your look.

Not All Stripes Are Created Equal

  • Skinnier lines always appear more delicate. A thinly striped accessory is an excellent way to ad an unexpected whimsical adornment.
  • Classic French stripes are the perfect essential. Polished and sophisticated with ease; pair with jeans or white pants to complete the look.
  • Avoid dreaded horizontal stripes by finding pieces with angled pockets to break them up.
  • Slim it down. Pairing your stripes with a solid color on your lower half will minimize the bottom and maximize the top.
  • Need a lift? Striped wedges are fantastic for a casual chic and comfortable summer look without going overboard.
  • Mix charming striped pieces such as elegant bangles, preppy inspired belts and Derby hats with edgier pieces for a fun twist on the classic summer look.
  • Embrace Independence Day and add a little red to enhance your beautifully dormant white and blue stripes.

Here are some of our ideas and inspirations that we love. What are yours?

Color Blocking, or Color Blinding?

19 Jun

Color blocking is arguably one of the most popular trends this Spring/Summer. It consists of using three different and seemingly conflicting colors to complete one very cohesive look. Do it right, and it looks fabulous and chic; do it wrong, and it looks like a kaleidoscope. The secret to perfect color blocking is using the color wheel.

The following colors will always flow beautifully:

  1. Colors directly next to each other
  2. Colors directly across from each other
  3. Colors that form right (90 degrees) angles with each other
  4. Colors that form a T
  5. Colors that form an X

Below are some of our favorite examples. What do you think? Are they color blocking or color blinding?

Summer 2011 Far East Fashion Trend

16 Jun

“Fashion’s love-affair with the Far East blooms this summer with an array of silky, decadent and exotic designs. Crisp and modern silhouettes are festooned with oriental sprays; while kimonos, warriors and fans inspire this summer’s hottest wardrobe additions. It’s all in the detail, whether wrap fronts, collarless jackets or lantern sleeved dresses, it is a celebration of all the spring/summer 11 hot trends – floral, utility, 70s – which is why there is something for everyone.” -luluscouture

From Runway to Everyday  - celebrate the artistry and grace of the Far East.

  • Keep your fabrics lightweight and silky or tough and textured.
  • Play with volume and mix boxy silhouettes with breezy palazzo pants and lantern sleeves, cinched with a statement obi belt.
  • Colours should be crisp ebony and white, rich and decadent brights or delicate pastels.
  • Inject metallics into your look with your accessories and jewellery.
  • Go for orchid, lily, iris and hibiscus floral prints.
  • Shoes should be vertiginous platforms or doll-like slippers.
  • Classic wrap tops are the perfect way to get the look at work.
  • Don’t be afraid to clash feminine floral prints with more geometric patterns.
  • Accessorise with fan-inspired accessories.
